I've been preoccupied by an illness in the family so nothing new to update. If you can believe it, I haven't even picked up my windows. In the meantime, feast your eyes on Rob Heard's Bough Houses, if I ever win the lotto I'm getting one!
I purchased two of the larger sized Prant boxes from Ikea and made a ton of noise hammering the metal corner pieces that join the side panels together. This wouldn't bug me so much except that it must bug my condo neighbors. No, I'm not tearing down walls, it's merely another Ikea item getting assembled. Here's some photos of the box with furniture in it to test out the box's proportions. The room height seems too high, but it's only 12".
The weekend before last, I went to the Got Craft? show. I suspected that it wouldn't have any miniatures but sort of thought there might be the odd thing that could be re-purposed for the dollhouse. No such luck for mini purchases, although I did get a few ideas for a more modern mini project. One highlight was the baking - cupcakes by the bakesale baking co. and macroons by kawaii eats. I'm salivating just remembering the sweet goodness, <sigh>. There isn't any progress to report on the paper Casa Batlo since I've been working on furniture kits for the Gryffindor Common Room. I almost purchased a sofa set off ebay but wanted to save a bit of cash and also find something more red in colour so I ended up bidding on House of Miniatures Chippendale kits. They came with blue material which I switched with a half metre of red fabric that I found at a local sewing shop for $4.50. I wanted velvet fabric but the options at the store weren't the right red and I was worried the fabric would be too thick. The kits are fairly straight forward, I only have to stain the legs on the chair to finish that kit and in general would recommend a light touch on the glue since it can ooze through the fabric otherwise. As with many of my crafts, don't look too closely. Part of me still thinks it would have been easier to have bought the premade sofa set...the jury is still out. "Big" news: I've purchased windows and those are on their way from England! I can probably post a reveal later this week. I was very tempted by the Cumberland castle kit as it's on sale this month (you get the east wing free). However, the price continues to make me pause. Plus, I wanted fancier windows and would have to pay to decorate the kit. My current plan is a simple wallhouse of four rooms constructed of Ikea Prant boxes. One complication is that the boxes I want are only available in one size at my local Ikea. The website has been teasing me with other sizes, which as luck would have it, can't be purchased online and are in stock across the border a few hours away. If I can't get my hands on US stock I might use the larger size. Oh, did I mention that these new boxes are discontinued? I was so tired of checking the website each day that I emailed Ikea and was given this news. Hopefully, it won't be back to the drawing board...
After much searching, I'm finally finding a few options for gothic windows. Of course, a lot seem to be out of stock at the moment but since I haven't decided on a dollhouse design yet that shouldn't matter. One tip is to use the word church in your searches. The 2 on the lefthand-side are from Wood Things and are the best priced of the bunch. Middle left are from Earth and Tree. Middle right can be found on 2 UK sites, York Miniature Scene or Baccraft Miniatures. On the right, some great windows On Being a Mini Mum found on ebay, which I sadly haven't seen on sale. Guess I could message the seller and see if they still sell them. I also like these mullioned windows from Maple Street Dolls Houses. Hogwarts had a mix of windows but with a small dollhouse I don't want things to get too messy if I mix and match styles. I suppose if there's diamond leaded panes in two window types that could tie them together... |
